If you were to ask anyone what the most iconic representation of Halloween is, the most common answer would be a carved pumpkin, or as it as commonly referred to, a Jack o' lantern.

The folklore behind Jack traces its origins to an Irish legend (or ghost story) about a greedy but crafty farmer named Jack. Jack managed to trick the devil into climbing a tree, and after doing so, sealed the devil in place by carving a cross on the tree. The devil did not take this lightly, and laid a hex on Jack - condemning him to eternal limbo on Earth. As he wanders the earth, he carries an ember that the devil tossed him that would never burn out - as it was from the flames of Hell. Jack carved out a turnip and put the ember inside it - wandering for a place to rest his soul. For this, he retained the name "Jack of the Lantern", which then was contracted to "Jack o' lantern".

History behind carving pumpkins dates back to before the Great Famine, when many Irish immigrated to the United States. Carving lanterns from vegetables started with turnips or swede - and did not acquire the name "jack o' lantern" until the early-mid 19th century. The practice of carving pumpkins is associated with a time of harvest, and did not become associated with Halloween until the mid to late 19th century.

The Jack o' lantern in its early years was always depicted with a face - and that face would be of many different forms, from comic to monstrous. In the late 20th century, artists began using precision instruments to put more artistic flavor to Jack, making him look like cartoon characters, people, or various symbols.

Have fun scooping out Jack this Fall!
